Hanover's school board members are charged with the responsibility to preserve and enhance public school education in Hanover County.

The school board accepts its obligation to establish policies for the total operation of the school division; provide qualified personnel; adopt an annual school budget; and determine educational needs and desires of the community. The school board sets challenging district goals, while monitoring and evaluating progress toward these goals.

The Hanover County School Board operates within strict legal parameters established by the Virginia General Assembly and the federal government. The school board relies on community involvement, professional educators, and deliberative judgment to fulfill its public trust.

Each of the county's seven magisterial districts is represented by a school board member appointed to a four-year term by the Board of Supervisors of Hanover County.

The superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools is appointed by the school board as the chief administrator and executive officer. Dr. Stewart D. Roberson has served in this capacity since August 1995.

School Board Goals
The Board will assert its role in the community as the educational policy leader of public education in Hanover County.

The Board will promote the delivery of effective instructional services as the primary responsibility of the entire school community.

Addressing the Board
Patrons of the school district who desire to address the school board should make their request, preferably in writing, by 10 A.M. the day before the scheduled regular board meeting. Recognition from the floor in the case where no advance request was made will be granted at a specific time during the meeting at the discretion of the board chairman. Individual problems and concerns are best handled through administrative channels, with the board acting as the source of appeal beyond the level of the superintendent.

A Cordial Invitation to Board Meetings
The school board encourages public participation and fosters open lines of communication with the communities it serves. Citizens and members of the news media are encouraged to attend regular and special or emergency meetings, study sessions, public hearings and work sessions of the board. Traditionally, the school board's regular monthly meeting begins at 7:30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month in the School Board office located at 200 Berkley Street, Ashland, Virginia.

Virginia law grants the school board a carefully regulated privilege of meeting privately in closed meeting to discuss issues related to limited and specific topics--such as, personnel, land acquisition, legal counsel, and student hearings. * Effective January 2004, the school board will enter into closed meeting at 6:00 p.m. to precede each regularly scheduled 7:30 p.m. meeting.  At the board's discretion, it may return to closed meeting after the regular session, if deemed necessary.

All official actions of the school board are taken during the public session. Board members cast all votes openly; voting is never conducted by a secret or written ballot.
