Substitute Teachers and Nurses

Substitute teachers are hired to teach students in the absence of a teacher, on a daily or long-term basis.  Substitute nurses are hired to work as needed in the place of a school nurse or clinic attendant.  Coaches may choose to work as a substitute teacher during the school day or just fulfill coaching responsibilities after school.   Coaches and SOL or ESL tutors complete the substitute paperwork once selected.

All applicants must have a high school diploma and must be at least 18 years old.  Preferred applicants have had some experience in working with children and provide three references by persons who have observed the applicant with children.

Substitutes are paid twice per month during the school year, based upon the number of days worked. (The 10-month work schedule works especially well for parents of school-aged children.)  A substitute for a clerical assistant is paid $49 per day and an instructional assistant is paid $51.45 per day when substituting in a regular classroom and $58 per day in a special education class.  A substitute teacher without a bachelor's degree is paid $64 and a substitute teacher with a degree is paid $75 per day.

Long-term substitutes must hold a bachelor's degree and we prefer them to hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license. When a degreed substitute works twenty or more consecutive days for the same teacher, the substitute’s salary will be based upon the daily rate of a beginning teacher, currently $182 per day.
