Dear Citizen, The second annual Citizens’ Academy for Hanover County Public Schools presents an opportunity for you to participate in a series of informational sessions which school leaders will present throughout this school year. We hope that you will apply to join the academy, and I look forward to meeting you on September 15 in the new Laurel Meadow Elementary School. The idea that we must “plan the future now” is both exciting and daunting, but either way, the message can not be dismissed or minimized. Our current students are growing up in a world that changes quickly, and the effects often are felt globally. The issues of international economics, food and energy supplies, and health care for everyone do not have simple solutions. These students’ educational experiences must prepare them to function and to prosper in a future world that we must anticipate in order to prepare them for it. The collaborative effort of many participants will be needed to ensure that we plan and deliver a relevant and useful education. In the Citizens’ Academy we will explain many of the processes used in daily operations of the school district including instruction, finance, transportation, safety, construction, food services, and many others. We want you to be well informed about all aspects of the school district because we want to serve you and your children well. We also want you to inform us about your expectations for your childrens’ education because their future is at stake, and their success is our mission.
