HANOVER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SCHOOL BOARD GOALS
2007-2008
- THE BOARD WILL ASSERT ITS ROLE IN
THE COMMUNITY AS THE EDUCATIONAL POLICY LEADER OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN
HANOVER COUNTY.
- The Board will receive reports
regarding the proposed implementation of the year two action plans
arising from the approved school community 2007-13 long-range plan.
- The Board will develop a
legislative agenda for presentation to the County’s legislative
delegation and to the Congressional delegation.
- The Board will continue to promote
the safety and security needs of students and employees.
- The Board will engage in activities
that promote an emphasis on continuous quality improvement.
- The Board will monitor the
activities that are designed to engage in additional public outreach
(i.e. Citizens’ Academy).
- The Board will continue to support
school environments that promote children’s health, well-being, and
ability to learn.
- The Board will continue to receive
training in school board governance and seek information on
educational programs and issues through attendance at school board
association conferences, seminars, and information-sharing sessions.
- THE BOARD WILL PROMOTE THE DELIVERY
OF EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES AS THE PRIMARY
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
- The Board will receive status
reports and/or proposals for action on each of the following
instructionally-related matters:
- career and technical study
implementation
- IDEIA requirements and special
education recommendations
- SOL test data review
- verified credit review
- professional development
program updates
- 5-year curriculum development
plan update
- alternative education
- utilization of quality
management tools
- No Child Left Behind Act
implications
- various models for assessing
student learning (quarterly/mid-term)
- trades-based programming,
including a study of community education opportunities
- pre-school education
- THE BOARD WILL DEMONSTRATE
LEADERSHIP IN AND SUPPORT EFFORTS TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN THE BEST QUALIFIED
EMPLOYEES.
- The Board will review plans to
compensate and recognize staff performance.
- review strategies to position
teacher salaries more competitively within the marketplace
- continue to evaluate the market
competitiveness of all employee salaries and schedule necessary
adjustments with particular emphasis upon effective recruitment
strategies where needed
- continue to evaluate market
competitiveness of fringe benefits programs and plan
enhancements as necessary
- The Board will promote further the
recognition of outstanding employee accomplishments at Board
meetings.
- THE BOARD WILL MONITOR THE EFFECTS OF
SIGNIFICANT ENROLLMENT INFLUENCES AND CONSIDER PLANS FOR THEIR EFFECTIVE
MANAGEMENT.
- The Board will receive updates on
enrollment projections and future enrollment concerns.
- The Board will receive updates on
the capital projects slated for completion in 2007-2008.
- The Board will award a contract for
the construction of the Trades School.
- The Board will name the Trades
School.
- The Board will receive proposals to
ensure proper levels of staffing necessary to maintain current
standards of service.
- The Board will engage in a process
of attendance boundary adjustments in order to prudently populate
Laurel Meadow Elementary School, and to fulfill other objectives, as
identified.
- The Board will examine the criteria
for the naming of School Board property.
- The Board will receive reports on
the instructional, human resources, and fiscal plans for the opening
of Laurel Meadow Elementary School and the Trades School in 2008.
- The Board will receive status
reports on the long-term growth, service, and employee
competitiveness needs of the district’s transportation function.
